MARITIME MUSEUM IN KARDAMYLLA, CHIOS ISLAND

MARITIME MUSEUM IN KARDAMYLLA, CHIOS ISLAND

The re-purposing of the primary school into a 900 sq.m. museum space is intended to re-introduce the building into community life, ensuring the balance of the traditional framework.
Year:2011
Client: Kardamilian foundation, Municipality of Chios island

The new function will be marked with a single sign: a metal   frame element will be placed on the southern edge of the building, making a visual reference to the characteristic side entrances of that are typical of the Kardamyla locality, as well as accommodation ladders leading to gangways on the sides of ships. The existing layout will be utilized, as the construction invades the empty space between the school and the neighbouring houses, while functioning as a shelter for the entrance that transforms into an interior reception area.  The placement of all functional entities furnishes the museum with the capacity to support one or more cultural event at the same time; serving as a platform, permitting use of indoor and outdoor spaces.
The permanent collections will be exhibited in a space created by an internal shell, inspired by the materials and the form of a ship. As surfaces are raised and fold back on themselves, they create levels of traffic circulation, ramps, exhibition surfaces, in order to depict within the existing building the intellectual web of themes, fields and chronological sections of the curatorial plan. The collection of objects, as well as the collection of verbal testimonies from the people of Kadamyla, led to the idea of a participatory museum, a maritime locus where museum exhibits and narratives told by the locals, the people recount related tales.
